Tips for working safely in transport

Do you work with means of transport? With a forklift, reach truck or other truck?   Whether you work on a public road or in a warehouse, you have to deal with safety risks. The world of transport is a wonderful world, full of innovation, but relatively many accidents also happen. After the construction sector, the most industrial accidents occur in the transport sector. Employers are responsible for safe and healthy working conditions. But of course they really need you as an employee!

What do you think, which accidents can happen if you take risks with means of transport? The top 10 is led by collisions. You can imagine it. You just don't have to pay attention and a collision can easily happen. In addition, many accidents are the result of falling cargo. If you stack your load too quickly, and don't check properly in the haste, the risks are lurking. It also happens that trucks tip over. Fortunately, you can do a lot to reduce the risk of accidents. It all starts with: taking time, paying attention and checking.

What can you do yourself to work safely?

Get your certificate

This is step 1. If you get on the forklift or reaction truck, it is important that you are in possession of a valid certificate. You can get this via Actief Werkt!

Check your means of transport

The employer ensures that machines are inspected annually. Yet that is not enough. At the start of your working day, walk around your machine to check it.

Avoid collisions

Just like in traffic, you are of course also dependent on others. However, you can also do something yourself. Always keep an eye out for bystanders and use your horn to warn you of your approach. Brake at obscure points and always look in the direction of travel. In this video you can see how to drive safely and easily in the correct direction.

Keep your load stable

Make sure that no one ever stops or walks under your load. Always check whether your load is stable and sealed. Also make sure that you do not load more than the maximum loading weight. Make sure that the load does not obstruct your view. If that is the case and there is no other option, ask a colleague to take a look. Never change the height of the forks while driving. Are you driving without a load? Then keep the forks low and parallel to the ground. There are stickers on the boxes with information on how to place the box and whether it contains fragile items. Never transport persons with a forklift, except in the special passenger seat.
